Nuevas Sonrisas: Where we work

Santa Catarina Mita is in the department of Jutiapa, Guatemala, a rural area in the southeastern part of the country. It is a typical, friendly, bustling Guatemalan town largely untouched by tourism. While the region’s volcanic soil had historically supported a strong agricultural economy, recurring droughts in recent years have created significant challenges for many farming families, increasing economic hardship and issues of food insecurity.  In addition, many of the rural children lack access to basic dental care services.

Known locally as Catocha, Santa Catarina Mita sits at the foot of the extinct Suchitán Volcano in what is known as Guatemala’s “Dry Corridor.”. The municipality includes several surrounding villages and neighboring areas that encircle the volcano.

Over the years, we have built strong partnerships with local residents who share our commitment to improving children’s oral health.
